The Tapt Kund is a group of natural sulfur springs situated on the bank of River Alaknanda beside the Badrinarayan Temple. It is said that when Lord Vishnu was happy with Agni Dev’s (Fire God’s) penance, he granted a boon to eternally reside in the form of this kund here. The kund can incinerate the sins of all the devotees who come to take a holy dip in it. Don’t you think it is a miracle of sorts, for such hot springs to reside amid all the low temperatures around? Indeed, nature never fails to astound us. Also, kund is considered to be therapeutic and possesses medicinal properties! A dip here is considered to be a good cure for skin diseases. According to a Hindu belief, performing ritual rights of ancestors in the kund marks their heavenly journey and ensures that their souls rest in peace. A holy dip in this abode of Lord Agni is a must before entering the Badrinath Temple. For the hygiene conscious- don't worry, the bathing area has separate arrangements for men and women. The normal water temperature is 55°c but rises gradually as the day progresses. So, when in Badrinath, do perform the ‘Agni Teerth’ that is believed to wash away all your sins.
